DIY Will DYI (Do You In)

There’s One Reason Spielberg Makes The Big Bucks and You Don’t -

Spielberg has made more bad movies then you have!

I’m not discounting the great  ideas he’s had but the road to success is always paved with a trail of tears from failure. In fact  (and you probably know this already), failing and failing fast is the only way you’ll get to where you want to be in your career.

Before you make that shiny pearl of cinematic mastery (the one that will put moola in your pocket) you’re going to have to make your share of movies that maybe don’t have the bright luster of creative brilliance! There’s just no getting around it!

There’s a million examples of this and I’m sure you can come up with your own list but here’s a few failures for you to consider.

  • The countless hours Michael Jordan spent missing free throws (including the number of times he actually missed the final, potentially winning shot of a game.
  • The number of times Babe Ruth struck out.

In fact  I think that Babe Ruth still holds the strike out record.

DIY Is a Death Knell For You, Your Film and Your Business

This is why we’re not a fan of DIY.  You’ll be hard pressed to have the time to fail enough times as a filmmaker to ever get to where you want to get in your career. Not to mention….

  • You’ll work yourself to death.
  • You’ll never achieve the kind of distribution that generates the good green stuff coming into your bank account.
  • You’ll forever be chained to that day job where you’re working for ‘da man’ rather then making movies.

Think Like Trump

Just as a point of comparison. Imagine that Donald Trump woke up one day to find himself penniless. I guarantee you that he’d be back ‘in the money’ faster then you can imagine. The reason is simple. Trump has learned that lesson that you can’t do it yourself and that you have to have help.

I guarantee you that  the first thing Trump would do in these circumstances is get on the phone and put together a team. You need to think like Trump

Is DIY Your Hearts Desire?

Rodney Dangerfield, born Jacob Cohen started by writing jokes for other comedians and doing comedy under the name of Jack Roy.  He tried being a signing waiter and an acrobatic diver before he gave up show business to sell aluminum siding. Comedy was always in his blood so years later he reinvented himself as “I Don’t Get No Respect” Rodney Dangerfield and the rest  is history. The moral of the story is……………

He succeeded because he followed his hearts desire and you as a filmmaker will get to where you want to go, live the life you want to live only when you submit to and follow your hearts desire.
